‘Negotiations’ apparently were handled by locking Seymour in a spare room and Yuna in another while yelling and screaming at Auron, Rikku, and Kinoc after vague explanations had taken place.
Anzi had been on the airship and was returned without incident to the palace, although she was forbidden to see Seymour until the wedding day. She redeemed herself somewhat in Jyscal’s eyes by telling him one of the ways Seymour was escaping. He had been climbing out the window and onto a tree; Jyscal had ordered all branches that were close to the windows to be cut off and burned.
Yuna considered herself lucky when all Jyscal had said to her was that he refused to abdicate until she bore Seymour a child. She considered herself even luckier when he asked if her friends would attend; as witnesses, ambassadors from Besaid to avoid disputes over the legality of the wedding, and insurance that there would be no more chaos if they were invited so they wouldn’t crash it—and to keep others from doing so.
Her friends were sent home and told to come back later.
Anzi refused to talk to her.
Jyscal refused to talk to her; in fact, he refused to look at her.
She wasn’t allowed to see Seymour until the wedding.
She hoped Seymour was getting some sleep. She didn’t need him falling over at the wedding.
……………………………………………………………………….
Jyscal’s words before the wedding to her had been nothing close to what she had planned to hear from her soon-to-be father-in-law. Then again, she had never truly planned to marry a Guado, or at all for that matter.
"You will present yourself as a Guado. You will obey the rules and traditions as a Guado. If you are lucky you shall be regarded as one by the people."
No death threats or yelling. It was the best she could hope for from Jyscal—towards her.
Her dress had been kept, but it had been altered. It had been made for human tastes, but was apparently now ‘Guado enough’ for this occasion.
They frowned on veils, so her head was bare save for the flowers replacing the red ribbon around her braid.
"Yuna!" Anzi yelled, rushing in without bothering to knock. "Yuna, I told you doing things like this was a bad idea! You have to help!"
"But the wedding’s in ten minutes," Yuna said.
"That’s just it," Anzi said. "The second I came out of his room, Seymour slammed the door and shut himself inside. You have to—"
There was the sound of something large breaking and Jyscal screaming obscenities.
"Oh no!" Anzi said. "Now Jyscal found out. Yuna, you have to do something!"
Yuna patted Anzi on the shoulder and went out into the hallway.
Jyscal was trying to break down the door with a chair with so much force it broke against the door. "You useless, worthless, disobedient, insolent, rotten little bastard!" he yelled and grabbed a spear from a frightened looking guard. "I’ll rip your damn throat out! Get out here this second or I’ll make you envy this damn door!"
"Jyscal!" Yuna said.
Jyscal rounded on her and for a second she thought she’d use the spear on him.
"You’re not helping," Yuna said bravely, but at the same time wishing he hadn’t noticed her.
Jyscal turned to the door and stabbed the spear so hard into the door the blade was lodged halfway in. Then he turned back to Yuna. "This is your damn wedding, you deal with this. Get that ungrateful, delinquent parasite out of that room and on the aisle! You have three minutes before I set the door on fire and roast him over it!"
Anzi, who had been cowering in the room, came out and knocked on the door. "Sweetie? Sweetie, come on out. Yuna’s here."
"Tell her to go back to Besaid."
"Sweetie, move the desk and chairs away from the door," Anzi said. "Sweetie, what’s the matter? You’re getting married."
"Anzi, she hates me."
"She’s right here, on the other side of the door. She chased Jyscal away."
"I heard."
"Sweetie, come on."
"I never said I wasn’t impressed."
"Sweetie, I know what you’re doing. Get away from the window, you’re just going to hurt yourself."
"Seymour, what are you thinking?" Yuna asked the door. "You can’t just leave."
"You can come with me if you like."
"What, elope five minutes before the wedding?"
"I meant run away and hope not to be found again. Yuna, my father’s back, I’ve been shot, and I’m about to be forced into the only relationship I’ll ever have and it won’t mean a thing to you. Would you mind letting me disappear in peace?"
"Sweetie!" Anzi protested. "That’s not true. Yuna cares for you, she… well…" Anzi stopped and looked at Yuna, who didn’t know what to say. "Take care of yourself, Sweetie."
"You’re a good friend, Anzi."
"Seymour!" Yuna said. "This isn’t meaningless!"
"Right, I’m sorry. Sparkle Magic Princess has to save Happyland," Seymour spat caustically. "You had better get out of the way. Your three minutes are up soon and when my father threatens to burn something, he always follows through."
"I’ll go find some way to distract him," Anzi said.
"Wait!" Yuna said. "I know this doesn’t mean as much as it should, but I wouldn’t have agreed if… well…"
"I don’t need pity Yuna," he said, sounding distant—literally, not like back near Baaj.
"It’s not pity and get out of the window!" Yuna said. "You’re two stories up. Now come on. Give this a chance, please. I know it doesn’t mean much now and I’m sorry but… I want it to mean something… eventually."
There was no answer, but the two women in the hall could hear scraping sounds as furniture was moved away from the door. After a while, it opened and Seymour stepped into the hall with a very resigned look.
His attire was far from the last time he’d worn something for his wedding. His sleeves were bigger, his coat was open, showing his usual necklace and tattoos. His skirt was more spread out, and he lacked the silly hat. His hair hadn’t been tied into a ponytail, but both locks had black ribbons braided into them. "You look beautiful," he said, rubbing his wound without being aware of it.
"You… um… look…"
"Pathetic," he finished for her. "You’re really going to take this seriously?"
"I’m sorry I didn’t think about how you would feel," she said.
"Actually, my father would probably have killed you if you’d said you had feelings for me."
"You two look so cute together. Come here," Anzi said, taking both their hands. "Now I want you go out there and there will be no shoving, no running, no screaming, no crying, no falling over in anyway. I want you both to go out there and say only what you mean. Do you two understand me?"
"Anzi, we’re the ones getting married," Seymour said.
"I know and I want to remember this forever. Don’t fuck this up."
"We’re not children," Yuna said.
"Of course you are," Anzi said and led them outside.
……………………………………………………………………………..
It was meant to be a small, quiet ceremony—at least in royal terms. This way, there were no guns, no spheres, no risk of terrorists—at least none that hadn’t been invited. It had also been the only thing Jyscal would agree upon for his son.
The whole of Guadosalam was there, which was huge compared to Besaid, but still a rather small population.
Anzi had brought the pair out and Jyscal looked unhappy about the whole thing. He seemed to feel he was accepting defeat by allowing this.
No one else seemed to feel that way. Most of the crowd was watching Yuna’s friends instead of the wedding. Jyscal could hear people talking about them. He suspected he and Anzi were the only Guado paying any real attention.
He frowned on the fact that Rikku was jumping up and down for joy at such a ceremony. The others politely stood and watched, Wakka was holding the only sphere at the whole thing, recording it for Rikku because she couldn’t keep herself still enough.
Seymour took Yuna’s hand, but stood there. She realized she would have to be the one to lead this time.
"Yunie looks so pretty!" Rikku said.
"She can’t be serious about this," Paine said.
"Why’s Seymour staring at his dad like he’s gonna bite his head off?" Chappu asked.
"Ha! Found someone to keep ‘im in line, eh?" Wakka said.
"Hush," Lulu chided.
Auron wondered what exactly had transpired while he was gone, but he wouldn’t be in the mood for long explanations for another month.
Save for Seymour continually watching his father, and Anzi making gestures for him to stop, the wedding had gone perfectly, quietly, and uneventfully.
The wedding had been the calmest thing to take place in weeks, and everyone was thankful for that, even Jyscal.
It ended with the whole crowd clapping—including Paine, but excluding Jyscal—and Seymour was given the first kiss he’d ever received while alive.
The reception, however, was not without a few incidents, minor though they were.
The only person the Guado warmed up to was Lulu, who resented the attention and people mistaking her for one of them.
Wakka got into a thankfully small argument about blitzball when he made the mistake of asking how Guado learned how to swim in a landlocked nation.
Amazingly, considering his attitude, Kimahri caused no trouble at all. Then again, it’s hard to cause trouble with people who won’t go within three feet of you—something which the Ronso seemed to appreciate.
After that, Yuna realized Seymour had wandered off on his own, abandoning his bride at his own wedding reception, something that Jyscal hadn’t failed to notice.
"Where’s Seymour?" Yuna asked Anzi, once she managed to find her.
"He--Jyscal," Anzi squeaked.
"I—" Yuna started to say to Jyscal, whom she found had an unnerving habit of sneaking up on people. It had to be genetic.
"If you’d answer the question," Jyscal said sternly to Anzi.
"Eep," Anzi managed, and started backing up, crashing into Auron. She screamed and ran away, leaving Auron to wonder if all Guado were so high-strung.
"Your friends are certainly making an impression on my people," Jyscal commented to Yuna.
Then the fight broke out.
The crowd around the tables scattered.
Wakka stumbled back, holding a bruised cheek and glared at Chappu, who was ready to throw another punch.
"And here I was to believe the people of Besaid were peaceful," Jyscal said flatly.
Before Chappu could hit his brother again, or even say anything, both of them were hit in the face with fruit.
"Would you stop it?" Rikku shouted, ready to throw more food.
The crowd looked confused. Lulu stopped pretending to ignore the small group making gestures about her breasts and looked at the two. Auron wondered what else had happened while he had been dead. Paine looked away from one of the Guado Glories that had been trying to put some moves on her for the past hour.
Even Kimahri’s attention had been distracted.
"This is Yunie’s wedding!" Rikku shouted. "What do you think you’re doing?"
Chappu wiped the smashed fruit from his face and stormed off.
"Hey!" Wakka shouted, but his brother paid him no attention.
"You people certainly seem to have interesting ways of stopping fights," Jyscal said, and wandered off to ask Wakka what the fight had been about.
"What sort of disaster did I miss now?"
"Se—!" Yuna said, stopped by a hand over her mouth.
"My father’s going to kill me if I so much as sneeze during my own wedding," he whispered, and led her away to somewhere more remote.
"Where were you?" she asked.
"I was talking to my mother on the Farplane."
"Was this really the best time?" she asked.
"It was the only time. I was locked in a room for the past three days," he said, barely stopping himself before hitting a large tree. "Who else do you think I have to speak to about all this?"
"Seymour, would you please get some sleep?" Yuna asked. "There’s nothing to worry about anymore."
"Yuna, my father broke two chairs over a door. What’s not to worry about?"
"Two? I only—Look, do you remember speaking to me about pillars and love?"
"I remember. Just like Yunalesca and Zeion."
"I want to be your pillar. You’re going to need it. And… I like it."
"You’re going to be—" he said, putting his hands on her bare shoulders. "Yuna, you have no idea how much you mean to—I didn’t do anything!" He pulled his hands away from Yuna and held them up in surrender.
Yuna turned around to see Jyscal not a foot away.
"Wonderful!" Jyscal shouted angrily. "You sneak off at your own wedding and then you don’t have any damn guts to try anything! Now one of you rescue my blitzball team from some lunatic who can’t hold her liquor!"
"Paine!" Yuna yelled, and ran off, making sure to grab Seymour’s hand to lead him away from Jyscal.
"What’s wrong with your father? I thought—"
"Oh, he’s fine. Just not around me. Or most anyone who has to do with me."
"And you didn’t mention this before, why?"
"Would you have believed me?"
"Lulu!" Yuna shouted, waving. "Have you seen—?"
"…Just when they learn to crawl, they go straight for the jungle," Lulu said, ignoring Yuna.
"Seymour went straight up the stairs when he first learned. The noise drove his parents up the wall. He even tipped over the—"
"Moving along," Seymour said, steering Yuna in another direction.
……………………………………………………………………..
Seymour and his father had another fight after the guests and their disasters all left.
Yuna decided she had hunted Seymour down enough. If he wanted to be found, he could come to her.
It was late at night when he did.
Yuna was already in bed when the door slowly creaked open and Seymour stepped inside.
"Anzi told me to go to bed," he said, and sat on the bed next to her.
"Look…" Yuna said sheepishly. " I know this is our wedding night and all, but… let’s go slow."
He blinked at her and leaned forward, his head landing on her breasts. Nothing happened.
"Uh… Seymour?" she asked.
All she got was his breath on her chest.
"Seymour?" she asked again, tapping him on the head.
Nothing changed. She shoved him off of her and put a pillow under his head as he slept soundly.
"REAL slow."
