Review for Cho-GALS! by Jennifer Taylor

Rating ** 1/2*

Synopsis: Everyone in Kotobuki's family is a police officer, her mom, her dad, her older brother, and generations before. She doesn't care about such things. She wants to enjoy her fashion club, wear makeup, and try her chances at going out with 'The most Handsome Feminist'.

Reveiw:  The first thing I thought was that the beginning song reminded me of the song of 'Clueless' when it was a TV show. Then I noticed that all of it was a Japanese version of 'Clueless' Kotobuki Ran does laudable things throughout the series, but in the name of fashion and makeup and her own rather shallow values. In the first episode she convinces the best student in town not to be an escort for older men, and that Kotobuki will gladly be her friend and the girl joins the fashion club. (Exactly how can she be the best in school if she's doing an escort service?) In another, she foils yet another escort service heist because the lady was using her name, not because it was wrong. (Are there really this many high school kids in escort services in Japan?) In yet another she walks up to a guy and asks him to give her his bag because its the one she wanted and tells him she's so pretty it would be a nice gesture. There are a few parts in this which were chibis explaining slang to the audience, which I thought was cute. Another part I didn't like was that the three minor antagonists in the series are 'black girls' which are just dark Japanese people. They are also horribly drawn, while the other characters look rather nice. I really don't like the message that sends out.

Notes: Ethnic prejudice against darker-skinned people

Misc: With all the slang being thrown about to insult different types of people, they don't address the fact that Kotobuki herself is an 'atsugesho' or 'person with too much makeup, and a 'Chapatsu' or 'person who dyes their hair to look like a foreigner (foreigners are looked down upon in Japan). Both of these are insults. Also, 'feminist' in Japanese means 'guy who gives things to pretty girls'
