| Background Info | Perona is one of the main antagonists of the Thriller Bark saga. Nicknamed 'Ghost Princess Perona' thanks to her consuming the Horo Horo no Mi (Hollow Hollow Fruit), granting her the ability to use ghosts and project an astral version of herself. Aside from being able to use ghosts as scouts, she can send them though people and 'hollow' an optimistic person, making them collapse on their knees and regret having ever been born. However, this doesn't work on an already pessimistic person, as Usopp demonstrated when he was attacked: since he's already pessimistic about his abilities, the 'hollowing' actually backfires against Perona and her ghosts, making *them* fall to their knees. This sets up Perona's rivalry against Usopp, as she tries to scare him to death with her abilities during their fight. She even tried to pass her astral hand through his body and crush his heart, then jokingly said she couldn't do that moments later. Perona is defeated when Usopp figures out her weakness: when she's projecting her astral form, her real body is immobile. He glues her to the bed, sics plastic cockroaches on her, and bops her on the head with a balloon hammer that says '10 Tons'. Since Perona is extremely gullible, she thought she was being attacked by real cockroaches and believed Usopp really could lift ten tons, making her pass out in pure fear. She regains consciousness moments before the gigantic zombie Oz punches a hole through the wall, decimating some of her Zombie Animals. Frightened, Perona decides to leave Thriller Bark on the Straw Hats' ship. But the Shichibukai member Bartholomew Kuma intercepts her. He deflects her ghost attacks with ease, then asks her where she would like to go. She says 'somewhere near an old castle engulfed in malice', and Kuma uses his Nikyu Nikyu no Mi ability to make her vanish. Perona's current location is unknown. Perona is a confident girl who reminds others of her authority on Thriller Bark. She especially loves cute things and joined Moria's pirates so she could have an army of cute zombie animals for herself. Ironically, she despises her most loyal subject Kumasy: it's not because he isn't cute, but because his voice doesn't sound cute. So Perona always tells Kumasy to be quiet, even after asking him to explain something. Despite being the Ghost Princess, Perona is easily scared of minor things like cockroaches, and is naive enough to believe the impossible. After her defeat to Usopp's deception, Perona firmly declares that he is her only enemy, even bypassing another Straw Hat member (Nami) along the way. She always calls Usopp 'Long Nose' due to his characteristic nose. Perona is one of several One Piece characters to have a bizarre laugh, hers being 'Horohorohoro!' in reference to her Devil Fruit abilities. |
