| Background Info | Meilin is the Scarlet Mansion's gatekeeper, an unknown type of youkai that defends the gates with impeccable skill. Despite the Touhou Project being a bullet-hell game, Meilin actually knows martial arts. Her bullets are characterized as rainbow-colored danmaku. Of any youkai, Meilin is one of the most human around, holding a conversation and complaining like a human. Meilin is a well-balanced fighter with her skills, so while she doesn't have any particular strengths, her weaknesses are also difficult to detect. This may be why she was selected as the gatekeeper. The best way to fight Meilin is to deal a one-on-one match against her and overpower her. She also likes taking naps at noon. In the Touhou community, Meilin is infamous for not having a name most people can remember properly. Her name Hong Meilin in Chinese is 'Red Beautiful Bell', which in Japanese is Kurenai Misuzu. Her name was mistranslated or mispronounced many times until the idea to call her 'Chuugoku' or 'China' in Japanese surfaced. Ironically, tagging this name to an unmemorable boss battle made her very popular, and a special patch for Touhou 7.5 helped make Meilin a playable character, though she has no storyline. |
