|Background Info||Rumia is a young youkai that can manipulate darkness, and the typically inconsequential first boss of EoSD, having no impact on the story whatsoever. The red amulet she wears in her hair is actually a seal that contains her powers, and she can't touch or remove it. She's depicted as a simple-minded and none-too-bright youkai who wanders aimlessly within her blob of darkness. Any form of light, even a small flashlight, will hurt Rumia's eyes, and she doesn't like the summer heat. Her power helps make things as dark as night around her, but she worries that summer plants won't get the appropriate level of sunlight needed to bloom, so she keeps wandering. Aya Syanemaru comments that she's disappointed that Rumia has no goals in life.
Since EoSD is the first Touhou made for the Windows platform, Rumia holds the distinction of being the first boss ever to use the new Spellcard System in the series: Spellcards are specially-themed and tricky patterns that every Windows Touhou boss has, which the PC-98 Touhous don't have. Fan-made doujinshi also depict an EX Rumia when her hair ribbon is removed, making her look older and carrying a sword of darkness. This form is never seen in the actual games, so this is not considered canon.
