| Background Info | Yukari is an ageless youkai who can manipulate borders. She can affect illusion and reality, can travel in gaps between space without anyone being able to follow her, can travel through the Hakurei border freely, and can do tricks like sticking her hand through a gap and stealing someone's food. Yukari lives simply for the enjoyment of life: she's been around for so long that nothing bothers her anymore. Of any Gensokyo resident, Yukari is the only one who knows what's happening in the outside world, such as when she knows what an iPod is. Her name 'Yukari' means 'violet', as it's the outside color on both a normal rainbow and a double rainbow. Likewise, characters associated with the opposite boundary color red, such as Reimu Hakurei or Remilia Scarlet, are also powerful. Yukari's debut is in Touhou 7 as the Phantasm extra stage boss, basically a souped up version of Ran Yakumo's Extra Stage fight with the addition of one more survival spellcard at the end. She appears again in Touhou 8 as Reimu's partner, Touhous 7.5 and 10.5 as a playable fighter, and in Touhou 11 as one of Reimu's three surface helpers. Indeed, Yukari has become one of the Touhou Project's staple characters for her vast knowledge and carefree yet sinister personality. Yukari is horribly irresponsible and difficult to guess, so no one can tell if any fluctuations in Gensokyo's borders are deliberate or accidental. To make it sound romantical, this phenomenon is called 'spiriting away', for humans think it's the work of gods, rather than a playful youkai. Yukari likes to sleep a lot, so all of the work is done by her shikigami Ran. She has the hardest personality to discern, seeing as she's older than the history of Gensokyo itself: she's the only one who actually remembers bits and pieces of the land's forgotten history. It's only thanks to her that Gensokyo is safe, protected from the outside world by her barrier. Yet in effect, Yukari has the power to destroy the fantasy world, but shows no interest in doing so. This isn't to say she's entirely harmless. Yukari can be described as devious and suspicious, or a mastermind, at best. She once organized an army of youkai to invade the Moon, but were defeated by the Lunarians. No one is sure if Yukari wanted to expand her territory, or if she actually wanted to teach Gensokyo's residents a valuable lesson: invading other worlds is a bad idea. Later, she becomes friends with Yuyuko Saigyouji, both before and after her death. She received a request from Yuyuko to weaken the border between the worlds of the living and the dead. Yukari actually knew of the ghost's plan to awaken the Saigyouji Ayakashi cherry tree, but also knew it would never work. She also didn't care, choosing to sleep on the problem, which causes her encounter with the heroines. They demand that she fix the border, and after the fight, she finally does so. Since then, Yukari's been affiliated with Reimu for their responsibilites as Gensokyo's border guards. All in all, Yukari may be a heavily-documented character, but her scheming personality and irresponsible behavior always leaves others guessing. She is not someone you'd want to know, anyway. |
